When the body's own cells deteriorate the tooth structure it's referred to as resorption. This is a painful and uncommon condition which requires quick professional assistance. It's important that resorption patients visit an endodontist as soon as possible because the longer resorption is left untreated the worse it becomes for the patient.
The farther the resorption has progressed in consuming the tooth, the more intensive the treatment. Should the resorption reach the pulp of the tooth, a root canal treatment may be necessary. In extreme cases, resorption may result in loss of the tooth completely.
If you believe you may be experiencing resorption do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with Dr. Swift at Mercer Island Endodontics.
